Prevalence of thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia carriers among antenatal women– A first study from Telangana population

Beta thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia (SCA) are highly prevalent inherited preventable blood disorders that require lifelong transfusions contribute to infant childhood morbidity mortality. It is mandate prevent these save the children from life long suffering by initiating stringent screening programs. A total of 2478 antenatal women visiting Modern Govt. Maternity hospital (MGMH), Petlaburz, Hyderabad (2000) Primary Health Care centers Balanagar (254) Rajapur (224) in Mahbubnagar district were screened for SCA using Complete count followed High Performance Liquid Chromatography detect carrier status. Husbands case if both couple carriers then they advised prenatal diagnosis. Out mothers screened, a frequency 3.05% 4.6% was detected different types hemoglobinopathies MGMH PHC’s respectively. Of thalassemia, beta predominant one with 2.15% 2.9% PHC’s. Three couples found be went In all three cases fetus normal continuing pregnancy. The present study first report among Telangana population. This warrants need during their early trimester order reduce incidence affected births.
